Summer lovin’…

This Summer we invited The Beijinger Boss (and Paleo Diet Fanatic) Mike Wester, Heyrobics Fearless Leader Linus Holmsater and director singer/songwriter Tian Yuan to design their perfect Summer salad. Over the next two weeks we’ll post some interviews and stuff but for now, just go get one – they’re available now!

Paleo Salad

Paleo-licious! Seared grass-fed beef, cucumber, yellow bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, red onion on spinach and lettuce served with walnuts, flax seeds, spinach & Gung Ho! vinaigrette.

HEY! Salad

Feta, walnuts and fresh pear on a bed of spinach and arugula topped with grilled veggies, Gung Ho! vinagrette and our special homemade Swedish beetroot meatballs! Läckert!

Onigiri Salad

This vegetarian salad designed by director/singer/songwriter Tian Yuan features cucumber & bell pepper on mixed lettuce served with our handmade Japanese-style toasted rice balls & ginger soy dressing.

Dearest Gung Ho! Massive,

First of all thanks for all of your (sometimes brutally) honest feedback. A premier product is our highest priority and a promise we cannot fulfill without people like you taking the time to call, email, or occasionally picket our offices.

We know a lot of you have been concerned about the changes with the Feta Cheese in our Greek Salad. We’d like to take this time to explain to you our whole thought process. Don’t worry, this story has a happy ending!

This is what happened:

1. Since we opened we’ve tried and tested a number of different feta cheeses supplied into China including Greek and Australian brands. The original feta that everyone loved was actually a Danish goat cheese style feta.
2. Consistent supply of of dairy products into China can be quite challenging. Our Greek Salad is such a popular item that we decided to search for better feta with more reliable suppliers.
3. Eventually we found really fantastic authentic Greek Feta from a great new supplier. We trialed it internally (mmm feta) and fed it to our friends. We honestly felt it was much better than our current Danish feta, and even though it was more expensive we decided to launch it with our Spring menu last April.
4. Over time, lo! a multitude of voices rose up, proclaiming ye! how much they loved the old feta.
5. So we went back to the drawing board, found the original Danish feta but sourced a top-notch supplier. So without further ado let us present:

Sorry guys, definitely cheese on our faces. You guys are absolutely our number 1 priority – we never want to disappoint you like this again so please keep the feedback coming!

From tomorrow until the end of the week, we’ll come and pick up your Gung Ho! pizza boxes and take them to be recycled. Reduce waste, recycle what you can, and maybe just reuse your boxers….

It’s very convenient to order a delicious pizza, but after the nice meal, what happens to the pizza box? Do you throw it away?

Where does the pizza box come from? Card board.

Where does card board come from? Trees.

And, the trees have been cut down, not always from renewable or replanted sustainable forests.

One fully grown tree is cut down for every 250 pizza boxes, and then every discarded pizza box turns to 0.22kg waste.

Are disposable pizza boxes necessary for pizza delivery? How can we save trees and reduce waste?

We cordially invite designers who are interested in sustainability to design the first reusable pizza box on the earth! Your design will not only impact Gung Ho! Pizza, but the whole pizza delivery industry, and even other food delivery sectors.

Prize:

The first prize winner will receive one year’s worth of Gung Ho! Pizza!

Goal:

Our goal is to deliver the pizza to the customers door or kitchen, pass them the pizza to be put on their own plate/board, and we then take away the re-useable pizza container to be washed, sterilized and used again and again

Design requirement:

• Creative & practical
• Pizza box material must be suitable for food packaging and ensure food safety.
• Easy to take away and transfer pizza and make it convenient for customer.
• Breathable, heat preservation: must ensure the pizza is kept warm and crispy during delivery.
• Easy to clean and dry, it can be reused efficiently
• Need to design 2 sizes of pizza box, one for 11 inches, one for 14 inches.

Statement:

• No limitation for number of entries.
• Top entries will be displayed and published online.
• The copyright of all entries will be open source and available under “creative commons” guidelines to promote the development and usage of environmental friendly pizza box.

Yeah! It’s Childrens’ Day!

For Childrens’ Day this Saturday all Kid’s Combo’s are just 30rmb! Pick one up this Saturday and go into the draw to win a Gung Ho! Kids’ Pizza Class for up to 6 kids!

This is Ray. He works in the central kitchen. He’s deaf and passes the time teaching the rest of the team bits and pieces of Chinese sign language. It’s pretty interesting! The Chinese language, having pictographic roots, makes CSL a fascinating study. In the picture above, Ray is making the sign for ‘kai‘ (开). As you can see, the shape he’s making corresponds directly to the appearance of the character.

In this second pic, it’s pretty obvious what he’s signing! Put signs put together make “kaixin” (开心) which you all know means “happy” in Chinese.

Ray has been with the Gung Ho! team for over 4 months now. He was born deaf, and studied Chinese Sign Language at a school for the deaf. He can speak and he reads lips to communicate with the CK team - which makes the central kitchen a no secret zone!

Yep. Ray’s pretty Gung Ho.

Just a little over a month ago, The Hutong hosted a group of kids from Inner City LA (ICEF Rugby), who have an amazing coach who believes in them and wants to show them the world and do what he can to increase their chances of going to university and continue playing rugby by organizing trips abroad.  This year, they came to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong (to see the HK sevens rugby tournament), but last year they did a trip around New Zealand and the documentary that was filmed about their trip last year was truly incredible.

Honestly, just after a few days with these kids, the crew at The Hutong absolutely loved them – we’re thrilled that The Hutong has taken initiative to host a fundraising event in Beijing to help them raise money for their future trips abroad, to other parts of the world.

Gung Ho! Bros. John and Jade are both massively into sport. John rowed all through high school and university and even made the New Zealand national Olympic team in 1996! He has participated in rowing competitions all over Europe and the USA. Jade played rugby all through high school and university and even made the Canterbury Rugby Football Club’s Under-17 team. Canterbury is known as the “Manchester United” of the rugby world. Gung Ho! Pizza is stoked to support this awesome event.

Check out this awesome… home-made? store-made? Mother’s Day greeting put together by Shuangjing Team Leader Mack featuring the Shuangjing Gung Ho! Players. We should totally kidnap him NK style and have him churn out more videos for our HQ marketing team!

Mack did a beautiful job! That’s one of the things we really love about working here – just how often we’re surprised by the talent of our frontline team! Mack started off as a delivery guy, worked his way up to Team Leader. Now apparently he’s working on becoming a director. That’s pretty Gung Ho!

Below is the Mother’s Day vid we did last year.

“Although 8-year old Fu Tian isn’t a mother, it’s clear that she is following the example of her caregivers by looking after the younger children. Here she cuddles little Hua Mei as the two of them wait in the hospital for an eye check up. The ayis don’t just treat their role as a ‘job’ – they lead by example and their love naturally overflows into the kids.”
